This is what amazes me. People will pay fortunes for awful pre-ripped jeans and sludge-coloured tee shirts as long as they say "Bench" or something on them. yet if it wasn't for people like GAP pushing the whole drab colour spectrum us blokes who like colours could dress in this without attracting ridicule. Why should it only be women who get to wear nice things?

That's better! Looks more in keeping with its reputation now. Most of these stories stem from the early 1960s when someone dug up a skeleton from the graveyard and arranged the bones in some ritualistic manner in a half-assed attempt at summoning up evil spirits. Quite what sort of evil spirits would be summoned up by using the bones of the wife of the village chemist I have no idea! Is there an Evil Overlord who can be brought forth from the depths of Hell for haemorrhoid cream and toiletries?

St Mary's church, Clophill. Abandoned many years ago, and reputedly haunted as well as being a regular meeting place for all manner of wiccans, pagans and weirdoes. Not to mention crowds of Chavs who go up there on Hallowe'en for some bizzare reason best known to themselves (Quite how Hallowe'en can be a Pagan event when the date was decided by the Christian Gregorian calendar I have no idea. Neither, I suspect, do they!) Quite a nice peaceful spot actually, and doesn't feel at all creepy, so... Time to run the image through the "Spooky Filter"! (See next picture)

Churchyard shops from the War Memorial. Bit grainy because the camera chose a high ISO. My fault for trying to take pictures in the dark! Note the trademark Nikon 14-pointed star around the street lamp too. That's what you get from the 7-blade diaphragm in the Nikon lenses. Little facts like that are a quick and useful way to bluff people into thinking that you know what you're talking about!

Courtyard of my favourite Cambridge pub. The Eagle in Benet Street. The back bar (Known as the RAF Bar) still has all its wartime graffiti on the ceiling and was the favourite watering hole for allied airmen during WW2. (Actually, I don't know why I put "Allied" there. I don't imagine there were all that many Germans there at the time).

The D40 certainly does take a nice snap. All I've done with this is to just tweak the colour intensity very slightly. Other than that, it was straight off the memory card. Nice!

This was taken about 3 stops under-exposed so that I didn't blow the highlights. I had intended to lighten it again in editing, but I actually prefer it like this. Nicer colours.

Exotic destinations? Ah, the wonder of the Nikon D40! This is Wells Next-The-Sea, North Norfolk. 27th September 2009. Lovely beaches and only about 90 miles from Hitchin. Cool! Okay, I used the D40, 18-55mm Zoom Nikkor lens and a Polarising filter, but it's still a bloody nice beach, I mean look at it! Cameras can do so much, but they can't polish a turd! Fortunately there's no need to in this instance.

Mustang and Spitfire up for an evening hop from Duxford. I should have selected a slower shutter speed really so that it didn't "Freeze" the props (Which were running fast during power check) but I let the camera sort it out instead. Still, not a bad snap I suppose. I'm not really a fan of old prop-driven stuff like this, but at least they're colourful. Aeroplanes were at their most cool-looking with the US Navy schemes of the 1970s. It's been downhill ever since. The current all over matt grey of the Eurofighter sucks. I don't believe it matters whether the aircraft is grey or dayglo orange if most intercepts are BVR with missiles anyway!

Duxford again, about 1991 I think. The old Trident has just come out of the superhangar resplendent in its new BEA scheme. Although my speciality was restoring and reconnecting the electrical systems on the museum's aircraft, we all got involved in general maintenance like this. Especially when it was a nice day! Polishing the Lightning was a never-ending job though.

Working at Duxford, about 1992. Me and an F4J (UK). I love the Phantom. The "J" was probably the best variant of it too. This jet was fresh from 74 Squadron, as you can probably tell by the tiger logo and stripes. It didn't mean the pilot liked Frosties! I believe there were plans to operate this one, but the good old CAA decided that Mach 2+ capable missile-armed interceptors were not something that civilians should mess with. Shame.

Latest Strat project completed. Candy Apple Red 1957 Japanese reissue. Bought cheap on Ebay, then gutted, cleaned and rebuilt using modern electronics (Lace Sensor Hot Gold pickups) and hardware. My answer to a "Dave Gilmour" look from the 1980's. Live Aid anyone?

Now that's an engine! I can easily see why the M50 "Big Six" has been the basis of so many great racers. It's a wonderful lump, and like all great engines it pulls harder the more you rev it. Upshifts at 6,000 rpm? Oh yes! Quite why anyone bothers with the wheezy and pathetic four-pot 5 Series models beats me.

The BMW. I'm pleased with it. It's not as luxurious or effortless as the old Merc, but it has the same power and is about 400kg lighter, so it's surprisingly nippy despite it's dinky little 2.5 litre engine (The smallest incarnation of the famous BMW "Big Six" powerplant). It handles amazingly well too. You can throw it around like a sports car which is great! I always fancied an E34 BMW ever since I used to work on them when they were new. The 3.5 litre 535iSE or even the "Rocketship" M5 would have been my first choice,. but when this one came along with full history and in immaculate condition with grey leather, aircon and BBS alloys I just had to have it. Especially for less than a month's wages! More importantly, I can tow the boat with it. It has the BMW factory fitted removable towbar. A good buy all round.

Current favourite guitar. Tokai LS85F picked up for an absolute bargain price on Ebay. Bit of a "One Trick Pony" as far as sound goes, but excellent for Rock. Especially through any Marshall. Another one I'll never sell. This thing has an amazing sound. You can pick it up and blast out any Led Zeppelin tune and you instantly feel better!

One of the best nights out ever! My favourite bar (The Cider Press, Barbican, Plymouth) during the Fastnet race. As a "Noisy, dirty" powerboat driver myself, I'm not exactly a "Yottie". I prefer a big engine to sails. Luckily no-one guessed. ;-) Still a great night out though. The music is Bob Seger's "Hollywood Nights" by the way.

Lunch at Queen Anne's Battery Marina, Class One World Championships, Plymouth. I was really lucky in that I did my VHF Licence course here the day before the World Championship C1 race, which meant that I had access to this area which was usualy out of bounds to the public. The tables around me are occupied by the drivers and teams. When you order your food, they give you a playing card which is used to identify your order. Which is why the girl coming out with my lunch is shouting "Queen of Hearts!" A novel idea. Nice food too.

Two Italian tourists who happened to be in Brighton unaware it was the Ace Cafe weekend. The chap liked my Ducati so much that I took some pictures of them and emailed them to him. Nice little souvenir. The number "1" on the seat always annoyed me, but they came from the factory like that as Ducati were celebrating winning the World Championships the year mine was built. Hence the script below the "1" of "Campione del Mondo - Superbike"

The slip at Mountbatten Point. This is where I'll be operating mine from. Nice and wide, loads of parking and accessible at all tide states (within reason). Just the job. Out of the marina, past the breakwater and turn right, full throttle. You can be in Cornwall very quickly.

Southampton, 2005. Off out to sample the delights of a Ring 21 Offshore Racer prior to buying my one. Nice boat. Even better with the Mercury 200 Black Max hanging off the transom like my one has as opposed to the more civilized and less violent Honda 150 like this one.

Ouch! Hospital after pranging Ducati. I still remember absolutely nothing about the crash to this day. The black eyes were caused by the deceleration of my head going from 30 to Zero instantaneously. The helmet broke, but did its job. Thanks Bell!
